Vehicle Testing FAQs

Browse through our frequently asked questions to find information about vehicle examinations, documentation requirements, procedures, and more.

Vehicle examinations are required in the following circumstances:

  • Periodic Testing: All vehicles over 7 years old must undergo regular examinations based on their age and type (refer to our testing frequency table)
  • New Registration: All new and imported second-hand vehicles must be examined before registration
  • After Modifications: Any significant changes to the vehicle (engine, color, bodywork) require examination
  • After Receiving Notices: Vehicles served with prohibition notices or black smoke notices must be examined after repairs
  • Change of Ownership: Some vehicle transfers require fresh examination
  • Accident Repairs: Vehicles substantially damaged in accidents need examination before returning to road use

For routine vehicle examinations, you need to bring:

  • Vehicle Registration Book
  • Valid Insurance Certificate
  • National Identification Card
  • Receipt of payment for examination fees
  • Carrier's Licence (for goods vehicles)
  • Public Service Vehicle Licence (for taxis and buses)

Note: Ensure all documents are original and valid. Photocopies may not be accepted.

For vehicle examination for registration (new or imported vehicles), you need:

  • Bill of Entry
  • MRA receipt showing payment of customs duty
  • NTA receipt showing payment of examination fees
  • Foreign registration book and pre-shipment inspection certificate (for second-hand vehicles)
  • Weighbridge certificate (for goods vehicles)
  • Motor Vehicle dealer's licence (TP) or Removal Permit (TEM)
  • National Identification Card

The duration of a vehicle examination varies depending on the vehicle type and condition:

  • Standard Vehicles (Cars, Motorcycles): 20-30 minutes
  • Goods Vehicles & Buses: 30-45 minutes
  • Complex Cases: Up to 60 minutes for vehicles with modifications or special requirements

Please Note: These times are approximate. We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before your appointment to complete payment and documentation.

If your vehicle fails the examination:

  1. You will receive a detailed report listing all defects found during inspection
  2. You have 14 days to repair the identified issues
  3. After repairs, you must return for a re-examination
  4. Re-examination focuses only on the previously failed items
  5. If the vehicle passes re-examination, you'll receive your Certificate of Fitness

Important: If the vehicle is not presented for re-examination within 14 days, you'll need to pay the full examination fee again and undergo a complete new inspection.

Booking Tips:

  • Book well in advance as slots fill up quickly
  • Have your vehicle registration details ready when booking
  • Cancellations or changes must be made at least 24 hours before your appointment

If you've changed your vehicle's engine, follow these steps:

  1. Inform the NTA in writing about the engine change, including the new engine serial number
  2. Bring the vehicle to the examination centre with:
    • The written notification letter
    • Vehicle registration book
    • Purchase receipt for the new engine
  3. After verification, you'll receive an amendment slip
  4. Take the amendment slip and registration book to the NTA Registration Section for official record updates

To change your vehicle's registered color:

  1. Inform the NTA in writing about the color change
  2. Bring the vehicle to the examination centre with:
    • The written notification letter
    • Vehicle registration book
  3. After verification, you'll receive an amendment slip
  4. Take the amendment slip and registration book to the NTA Registration Section to update official records

Note: Some color restrictions may apply to public service vehicles. Check with authorities before repainting.

Before making any modifications to your vehicle:

  1. Apply to the NTA for authorization to carry out the modification
  2. Submit detailed plans showing the proposed modifications
  3. Wait for approval before proceeding with any work
  4. If approved, you'll receive authorization to proceed
  5. After completing modifications, bring the vehicle to the examination centre for verification

Important: Never proceed with modifications without prior approval. Unauthorized modifications may result in your vehicle being deemed unroadworthy.

For autocycles/motorcycles with damaged frames:

  1. Apply for a change of frame, supported by:
    • Certificate from an Insurance Surveyor
    • Police report
  2. Bring the vehicle to the Examination Centre for verification
  3. If verified as genuine, the examiner will submit a report
  4. A new frame number will be allocated and plated on the vehicle

A Black Smoke Notice is issued when:

  • A Road Transport Inspector or Police Officer observes your vehicle emitting excessive black smoke
  • The notice requires you to repair the issue and present the vehicle for verification
  • After repairs, the vehicle must be examined at our centre
  • We use a smoke meter to check opacity levels (must be below 50%)
  • If the vehicle fails the smoke test, a Prohibition Notice may be issued

If your vehicle receives a Prohibition Notice:

  1. The notice is issued when a vehicle is deemed unfit for road use
  2. Your Certificate of Fitness is removed and sent to the examination centre
  3. You must repair all identified defects
  4. After repairs, bring the vehicle to the examination centre for verification
  5. If the vehicle passes inspection, your Certificate of Fitness will be reinstated

Warning: It is illegal to drive a vehicle with a Prohibition Notice. The vehicle must be towed to the repair facility and examination centre.
